Boring Index Funds, Trading the War, AI Agents Everywhere, Back to Thailand
Another TBB post featuring the most eclectic links around the web such as boring index funds, trading the war, AI agents everywhere, back to Thailand, history of stock market pullbacks, how Iran sees the war, oil shocks, cartel Olympics, Chuck Norris jokes, best hotels for stargazing, the best photography links and of course always all of the most important developments in the crazy world of frequent flyer miles and points at the lower half of the post. And much more. Enjoy the weekend.
Blog Mission: To Educate. Entertain. Inspire. In That Order!
This blog started way back in 2012 focusing on my crazy hobby addiction of traveling with frequent flyer miles, hotel and bank points. It has since evolved to curated posts featuring the best web content along with my commentary.

BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
This is truly a one man labor of love operation, enjoy it while it lasts.
Read the whole thing. If you don’t have the time, here are the key takeaways:
Index funds aren’t boring; they’re a recipe for predictable growth with a high probability for success.
The more complex your investments, the more chances there are that something can go wrong.
A basic index fund can often outperform most hedge funds, private equity funds, and active managers.
I agree with every word and this post captures how I manage clients’ money and my own. I leave the excitement for my travels instead…

Good sensible advice again from Jason Zweig at his WSJ “The Intelligent Investor” column: How to Trade the War: Avoid Gimmicky Strategies and Overheated Assets. Investors have to fight the urge to make big moves as the war in Iran rattles markets.Investors have to fight the urge to make big moves as the war in Iran rattles markets.
The assets most likely to benefit during wartime are already expensive. If you didn’t buy an umbrella while the sun was shining, that protection will cost you dearly now.
Before this war is over, it’s likely to generate a lot more surprises—positive and negative. Even if you don’t feel nervous now, unexpected setbacks in the war could later make you vulnerable to a fear-based marketing message.
Big, sudden portfolio changes are like that: easy to put in place and hard to reverse. Whatever you do if this war worsens, you should avoid doing anything that can’t be easily and cheaply undone.
Here’s my unscientific definition for stock market downturns:
-5% = pullback
-10% = healthy correction
-15% = correction
-20% = bear market
-30% = collapse
-40% = crash
-50% = crisis

Anyone can pretend to be anything they want online. Not sure who said it but I do remember the “on the internet, no one knows you are a dog” meme. Anyway, another piece of shit who was not what gullible people who fell for his shit believed: FINRA-Suspended Broker ‘K Money’ Pleads Guilty to Social Media Fraud.
…he reinvented himself as a successful trader on Facebook, calling himself “K$” or “K Money,” and touting his (false) bona fides as a “Wall Street veteran,” a “luminary,” and a “beacon of knowledge,”…Thom offered subscriptions for trading lessons and daily trade suggestions, managing a Facebook group called the “K$ Trading Group.”Thom used the remaining funds for dining at restaurants, travel, luxury goods, cash withdrawals and transfers to other accounts (the expenses included $6,026 for Airbnb and $5,883 for an all-business-class airline flight between New Jersey and Paris). [Wonder what miles he earned lol].
Instead of trying to guess when the AI—or any other—bubble might burst, investors should take the view that the market could drop at any time. Then structure your portfolio accordingly. First, make sure you’re diversified at the asset class level, with enough stowed in short-term bonds or cash to carry you through a multi-year market downturn. Then go one level deeper, auditing your stock holdings for individual stocks or funds overly exposed to any one corner of the market. And if you’re in a private fund—especially a private credit fund—I’d identify the nearest exit.
Mr. Laverty has about four or five agents — he lost count — controlling parts of his life. They all answer to one “god agent” that manages updates. The agents have access to his social media accounts, to tell him what’s trending and draft posts for him; they code for him; and they have access to his banking information. His space-gray MacBook is always open and connected to Wi-Fi so he can run his agents around the clock. “If I’m not doing this, then how am I going to attain like a level of success compared to the other people around me?” he said. [WTF repeatedly]
The article has some other quotes by others that just made shake my head so much it almost separated from my neck…I would not be a proud parent if these were my kids, hello?
This will not shock you since you have been reading my blog: Share of web articles written by AI or humans. Sit back, click play and watch the horror (after ChatGPT was introduced in 2022). Every word in this blog is by one human.

IRAN WAR
Added this section, hopefully not going to be back next week.
You should probably know How Iran Sees the War. Highly recommended Foreign Affairs article. I feel for the Iranian people, they have endured so much. And no real hope of ending being ruled by the mullahs. The article ends this way:
But what is clear is this: Iran is fighting a fundamentally different kind of war than its adversaries. The United States and Israel are attempting to weaken the state from above via decapitation strikes and destruction of the country’s infrastructure. But the Islamic Republic is working from below, mobilizing supporters and reshaping public sentiment through wartime nationalism. It wants to defeat its enemies on the battlefield. But it is just as focused on consolidating its position at home.
This is one of those special stories I loved reading. It was to be placed in the MUST READ GEMS section above until it was replaced from that a day before publishing. It involves movies, drug lords and the games they play, some unique characters, the manager of the music band The Killers and the actor Michael Peña who still wants to go ahead with the movie! Grab a cup of coffee and enjoy: The Incredible Story of the Cartel Olympics. A Mexican athlete said he was kidnapped and forced to compete for his life in a tournament of gangs. But was he actually playing a different game?
Chuck Norris once shot an enemy plane down with his finger, by yelling, “Bang!”
When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night he checks his closet for Chuck Norris.
The only time Chuck Norris was ever wrong was when he thought he had made a mistake.
Chuck Norris once kicked a horse in the chin. Its descendants are now known as giraffes.
Chuck Norris’s belly button is actually a power outlet.
There are many famous people out there who don’t deserve to be. Pure charlatans but they are convinced they are geniuses. Even after repeatedly being wrong. So was this guy: Population Doomster and False Prophet of Ecological Apocalypse Paul Ehrlich Has Died. The author of The Population Bomb was never right but never in doubt that the world was about to end. Ehrlich seemingly never encountered a prediction of doom that he failed to embrace…or nearly six decades, Ehrlich persisted in predicting imminent catastrophic doom even as humanity grew both more populous and prosperous.
Instead of a population collapse due to mass starvation, the world population grew from 3.5 billion in 1968 to 8.3 billion today. Instead of a substantial increase in the world death rate, it fell from 12 per 1,000 people in 1968 to 8 per 1,000 people in 2023. Farmers deploying modern tech have boosted the number of daily calories per person by more than a third since the 1960s. Consequently, rather than millions starving, the proportion of undernourished people worldwide declined from 27 percent in 1969–71 to 8.2 percent in 2024.* Global average life expectancy at birth rose from 57 years in 1968 to 73 years in 2023.
TRAVEL
Some of these look very nice: The 19 Best Hotels in the World for Stargazing. Can’t wait for The Points Guy to steal this and turn it into “The top travel rewards credit cards to get to stay for free at the best hotels for stargazing”. I guess marketing was not my strong point here in my blog, sad.
This blog started with a focus on miles and points and travel. It has evolved since then. Everything below deals with the hobby of collecting frequent flyer miles and points and maximizing your travel experiences. If you are not interested, you can stop here, thank you.
I have stated before in my blog that the next airline to merge away will be JetBlue. And likely United will buy it. So, here we go: Report: JetBlue Eyes Sale to United, Alaska, or Southwest. I just don’t see Southwest winning this; then again, I thought bags would always fly free with it so who knows? It may be a bit too much to chew for Alaska so close after buying Hawaiian. We’ll find out by the end of 2026 I think.
Very interesting story: ‘She’s Not Elizabeth Holmes. She Actually Has Personality.’ How another gutsy Forbes 30 Under 30 start-up founder got in trouble with the Feds. And what is it with that Forbes list? Looks like if you are named in it there is a good chance you are a fraud. Anyway, I had never heard of the startup Kalder. Which is surprising, since the company was in the business of corporate rewards points. I apologize to the TBB readership for missing that. Maybe if you actually support this blog I can hire an intern to help me out. Or maybe get me an AI agent bot to assign tasks to because it would be cheaper? Ok, let’s not go there now. Like I said earlier in this blog post, anyone can post whatever shit they want online. And it looks like this lady did exactly that.
According to the indictment, Güven had been keeping a bogus set of books to entice investors. While she claimed an annual revenue north of $1 million, the real number was much more modest: Kalder had made only $60,000 in total revenue since 2023. Feds say she cooked the books and invented deals with top clients, including Godiva, to “swindle” investors out of $7 million as she burned through their money trying to get the company upright.
I guess this is good news. Because it is so apparent that the credits available on the Amex Business Platinum completely suck when compared to the credits on the personal Amex Platinum cards: American Express Business Platinum & Gold Cards To Add $300 ChatGPT Business Credit. I don’t care about ChatGPT much but if I could get it for free I would. And then, never mind: “Business ChatGPT requires a minimum of two users. If you sign up for an annual ChatGPT plan for two users it will cost $600 and you’ll get $300 back from AmEx.”

MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING
I was shocked to see I got an alert from PointsYeah that there was a business class award to Bangkok. And the actual flight itinerary was actually decent flying from Detroit to Chicago O’Hare on United First and then on to Tokyo Haneda on United Polaris and then on ANA Business class to Bangkok. I booked it for 100,000 United miles. It was available for 87,500 Aeroplan miles as well but I like the easy United cancellation policy and I am keeping it for now. #ToBeContinued.
The work crew working at renovating our house kicked us out for 2 or 3 nights, something about the new wood floor to set or something. In pre 2026 times, I would just burn some World of Hyatt points for a nearby Hyatt property. In 2026 times, with the new Chase #nomorefreeChasepointsearningnonstop credit card reality I am not doing that. So, I used my $300 Amex Business Platinum FHR hotel credit to stay for one night at the Detroit Shinola hotel. The price I prepaid was about $383 and I am sure that will go up to around $425 or so with the valet parking. Interesting property, great location, nice upgraded room supposedly. We managed to have a very nice dinner at the main Italian restaurant, excellent pasta dishes. It came to $3.74 after the $100 FHR credit and we are looking forward for the breakfast this morning (typing this very early the morning before publishing). The one thing that stands out is the room does not have a desk, WTF! And no outlet near the area where the mini bar and coffee maker stands, I mean, come on. I had to improvise with booking stands to place my laptop on near a chair. This alone is a deal killer for me.
I thought the movie Project Hail Mary was way over rated. Unbearably slow at times and confusing. If you like Ryan Gosling, this movie is for you.
The last World Cup qualifying spots will be revealed shortly. Amazing drama in games yesterday with Wales and Ireland going down dramatically in cruel penalty kicks, Italy now one win away from getting back to where it belongs, dreamers Suriname and especially New Caledonia no longer dream for ever most likely, Ukraine was run over by one Swedish player scoring three goals in the game of his life and Kosovo beating the Slovaks at their home in an amazing 3-4 game. I ran out of time to add links to the highlights here, sorry. Look for more drama next week when it is WC ticket time, these were just the semifinal playoffs.
Continuing to post my pics/videos from the November/December 2025 family trip to Thailand and Malaysia, nearing the end.
This blog ends when my 2nd credit card vendor kicks me to the curb due to “low sales volume”. Or the latest three month accounting below turns to all red, whichever happens first. Until then, enjoy my blog if you read this far.

First! Haha! Haven’t said that for a while. LOTS of good stuff this time. Congrats on the ticket to Bangkok! I’ll be dipping in and out of this all weekend. Lots to read, though I already saw that one article about the cartel Olympics. Crazy stuff, right? Thanks as always, George! I truly appreciate the blog!

The blog is indeed appreciated!
My guess that the Sapphire Reserve refresh would work out, at least for
this year, seems right. The 1.5x points boost on a cross country flight
and the 2.0x points on an Edit hotel made a very big difference.

I’ve been glued to screens keeping up with the Iran thing for a solid month now. For about the last three weeks I’ve been feeling exactly like I did in February 2020, wondering why people aren’t freaking out about the energy / supply chain / inflation disaster that’s slowly unfolding due to events halfway around the world.
It feels like something changed today and people are starting to be concerned but I don’t think we’ve hit the appropriate level of alarm yet. That said, the U.S. will be in a pretty good position given that we export energy and make most of our own fertilizer. But good luck to the folks in poor countries.
Forbes 30 under 30 is a cursed list, lmao.
My son read “Project Hail Mary” and saw the movie; he loved both. Haven’t seen it yet myself, we’ll see.

@ Carl: Yeah, that cartel Olympics story is so wild. I can see why Pena is excited about it, acting that main character could be Oscar material. Then again, with the Atlantic writer in the mix, maybe the movie can be from his perspective with Pena acting the writer character. But undoubtedly that con guy, wow, playing the long game and almost pulling it off. If he channeled all this talent to good deeds huh? I also wondered if his mom was in on it or maybe he fooled her too. Or probably she is not his mom lol.
@ DML: I am starting to think we all can be blinded from our deep inherent biases in this space. Like, for me, I never liked Bilt. And hard for me to switch from “can’t get any decent value out of DL Skymiles and Marriott Bonvoy programs”.
@ NickPFD: Hopefully something changed. There is a reason the phucking morons in charge do shit in the weekends! Mr. Market is our best hope the world gets out of this jam. Then again, these morons double down, it is getting repulsing to watch. And super unhealthy. I recommend you get unglued from the TV watching Iran war stuff. I do recommend AlJazeera which is actually a really good news organization. And just avoid all the US based news outlets. Yeah, I agree we will be fine and the world is suffering and will despair if this shit is still going on longer. At some point this too shall pass. I used to kid that Trump will kill us all. This is no longer a joke we must find a way to survive this guy.
I did not read that Hail Mary book. I am a sucker for everything science fiction. But I thought the movie was not well made and purely acted, especially for everyone around Ryan Gosling.

Trump asked NATO to send ships to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. Every. single. ally. refused. Trump called them “cowards” and said NATO has a “very bad future”. He then announced that the United States doesn’t actually need the Strait of Hormuz. He then said countries that do need it should police it themselves. He then told China to police it. He then sent 5,000 Marines toward it.
This sequence of statements was delivered, as far as the public record shows, by the same person, using the same mouth, within roughly 24 hours. The allies are cowards for not helping with the thing he doesn’t need, which is why he’s sending Marines to die for it, unless the countries that do need it do it themselves, which they won’t, because they’re cowards.
Trump told reporters the strait could be opened with a “simple military maneuver” that is “relatively safe” but requires “a lot of help”. Help. From the cowards. Who he doesn’t need. For the strait. That he also doesn’t need.

Good morning Buzz,
Good luck today, as I’m assuming you’ll be watching the games today, especially Vols/Wolverines.
The Tucson boys put on quite a show in the 2nd half last night. Speaking of Tucson, I got to the airport two hours early this morning for a flight to Vegas. Exactly one person in line for TSA Precheck…that was me. In the regular line…two people. The desert gets a hard time, bit it does have its perks.
Enjoyed the article on the Cartel Olympics. I have to agree all that extra work that could have gone towards a good cause. The grift is seemingly everywhere these days, disheartening. Thank goodness we have sports gambling to take our mind off these things…haha
I do not spend much time on the internet apart from work so I imagine most people have seen the sign sweeping the country, I had to chuckle…
“Are we great yet, cause I just feel embarrassed”
It’s true, I don’t get out much.
Thanks for the great post as always, enjoy the game.

That Duke-UConn game was epic, that freshman’s last second shot will live on in NCAA history…like that Laetner turnaround shot.

The nerfing of Citi to Preferred and the imminent Hyatt deval is really troubling. Not sure where hotel opportunities will lay in the future. Am globalist with Hyatt am started looking elsewhere but value is just not there. It’s like an airline world where every program looks like Delta. One has to think becoming a free agent and using points via portal would be the way ahead?
G
GeorgeTBBAuthorApril 1, 2026
It’s a new reality on the ground Peteco. Harder to earn due to bank restrictions, so much harder to burn since everything is full, devaluations galore. We are all evolving dealing with a hobby that is just not as valuable as it used to be. Let’s face it, we have been spoiled. And still addicted. But we are nearing the point I think to go all cash back and going to free agent mode burning our points in portals booking what is best. Yeah it sure sucks. But it is what it is. I blame so many bloggers and sooooo many YouTubers who discovered banks pay them to sell plastic and suddenly all got the urge to show others how to travel for free smh. If they move on…I will likely still be here trying to sell a few cards at best lol.
Anyway, Bolivia imploded. Then again, wtf is wrong with Italy, wow. It would be really something to see Iran-Iraq in the WC. Of course not going to happen but what if…

UofM looked like an NBA team beating Vols, wow. Going to be an epic game with Arizona!
That Duke-UConn game was epic, that freshman’s last second shot will live on in NCAA history…like that Laetner turnaround shot.
I have a few amazing articles abt gambling coming up in next post. Amazing as in…this is not going to turn out well.
Also, epic World Cup qualification games on tap
The nerfing of Citi to Preferred and the imminent Hyatt deval is really troubling. Not sure where hotel opportunities will lay in the future. Am globalist with Hyatt am started looking elsewhere but value is just not there. It’s like an airline world where every program looks like Delta. One has to think becoming a free agent and using points via portal would be the way ahead?
Of course not going to happen but what if…
Tomorrow’s blog post will be one of my very best.
Another month passed failing to hit both cc and coffee targets. Incredibly deflating you guys…
Not seeing me doing this much longer. Focusing on $ will take away from focusing on content quality and I have a problem with that. So, enjoy while this lasts.

I beg you Delta
and Award Wallet, Upgraded Points and of course TPG can’t just stop selling plastic.
