Another TBB post featuring the most eclectic links around the web such as a podcast about alternate realities, early tax season tips, AI in 2026 and beyond, the global migration megatrend, the 100k Venture X Card offer ends, attention spans and Ponzis and ugly memes, New Year’s Eve traditions around the world, the weakness of strongmen, the world’s busiest flights, the best white sand beaches, the best photography links and of course always all of the most important developments in the crazy world of frequent flyer miles and points at the lower half of the post. Have a great weekend!
Blog Mission: To Educate. Entertain. Inspire. In That Order!
This blog started way back in 2012 focusing on my crazy hobby addiction of traveling with frequent flyer miles, hotel and bank points. It has since evolved to curated posts featuring the best web content along with my commentary.
This blog stays in business with clicks ONLY from readers for credit cards and coffees. You can always get to my credit card links by clicking on “CREDIT CARDS’ at the menu on the top of the homepage or the “We make finding a new credit card simple” banner on the right sidebar. Or, preferably, you can receive new offers in your email inbox by signing up to receive alerts HERE . Or just email me.
BLOG HOUSEKEEPING
This is truly a one man labor of love operation, enjoy it while it lasts.
See you Tuesday for the third edition of the 2025 Annual Best of Lists collection. Or I may shift it to Friday giving me a week “off” from the regular Friday type of posts, we shall see.
This blog will continue to resist enshittification in 2026 as well. Maybe I add this to the blog mission? To Educate. Entertain. Inspire. And Resist Enshittification. Or something like that…
QUOTE OF THE WEEK
“Reality is created by the mind, we can change our reality by changing our mind” – Plato
MUST READ GEMS
Well, this is not a read. But a podcast. Of a son trying to save the family from a father who is all in on conspiracy theories. It stunned me…while banging my head on the wall trying to get this guy to snap out of it. Sometimes, you just give up, so sad. You may inflict similar emotions to yourself, you have been warned.
Before the October 19, 2025 heist in which the French crown jewels were stolen, the Louvre’s video security password was LOUVRE.
ChatGPT’s efficiency per prompt has improved 33X the past year, falling to 0.0003 kWh, roughly the energy required to stream Netflix for 8–10 seconds or conduct a Google search in 2008. Total AI data center water usage is also now equivalent to 3% of the water used by all U.S. golf courses.
The average American consumes around 100GB of information per day, up from 75 GB/day in 2015, 63 GB/day in 2012, 34 GB/day in 2008, and 7.5 GB/day in the 1970s.
The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, exerts less pressure on the ground than a person standing in stiletto heels. The building weight 500,000 tons, but exerts a ground pressure of only 90 psi, compared to the 850 psi exerted by a single stiletto heel. The Burj Khalifa would need to be about 18 miles tall to exert the same amount of pressure on the ground as a person standing in heels.
No NFL game has ever ended with a score of 36–23. Across the approximately 17,000 games that have been played in NFL history, this score should have happened 2.68 times by now. The probability of this score never occurring is 4.9%: across roughly 20 parallel universes, we happen to live in the one without this score.
PERSONAL FINANCE
Starting in 2026, we have the following numbers to take into account:
401(k) and 403(b) elective deferrals: $24,500
Age 50+ Catch-up: $8,000
Total for age 50+: $32,500
Total catch-up for age 60-63: $11,250 for a total max of $35,750
Traditional and Roth IRAs: $7,500
Catch-up: $1,100
Total for age 50+: $8,600
Standard deduction Married Filing Jointly: $32,200
Standard deduction Single: $16,100
HSA contribution Single: $4,400
HSA contribution family coverage: $8,750
Estate Tax Exclusion: $15,000,000 (Phew, that will shelter my profit from selling this blog eventually LOL)
Some key benefits that could boost refunds include:
A new $6,000 additional deduction for many who are 65 and older. That tax break starts phasing out for taxpayers with a modified adjusted gross income of $75,000 if single and $150,000 for married couples filing jointly.
A new auto loan interest deduction that can apply to up to $10,000 in interest paid in a year. That deduction phases out by $200 for every $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income above $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers.
A new, but fairly complex deduction for up to $25,000 in tip income that starts phasing out when taxpayers earn more than $150,000 if single or $300,000 if married filing a joint return.
A new deduction for up to $12,500 in overtime income for singles or $25,000 for joint filers. That deduction starts phasing out when taxpayers earn more than $150,000 if single or $300,000 if married filing a joint return.
A maximum child tax credit increase of $200
The standard deduction will increase by $750 for single filers and $1,500 for joint filers.
CRYPTO/TECH/SCAMS
Here is the latest December 2025 Ponzi Scheme Roundup. Dominated again by crypto where fraud is the killer app. Anyway, sometimes I wonder about people believing this smh:
…Fund had a cumulative return since inception of 4,384%.
Why does this shit still exist? The ugly memes driving crypto sales. A grotesque set of manufactured characters have emerged on social media to inflate memecoin prices. Barf!
There’s “George Droyd,” an android reincarnation of George Floyd, created in April to promote the $FLOYDAI cryptocurrency. The “Kirkinator” was made in September following the death of political commentator Charlie Kirk in order to promote the $KIRKINATOR coin. There’s also a recurring cast of minor stock characters, including “Epstron” and “Diddytron” — parodies of Jeffrey Epstein and the rapper Sean Combs — also known as Diddy. These accounts, which occupy the same narrative universe, have garnered millions of views, often by playing into racist and antisemitic tropes. The short videos include frequent use of bigoted language and recurring plot lines about race purification. [If you ever clicked on any of these, please get out]
AI
We need to ask this: What If? AI in 2026 and Beyond. According to the authors, there are two possible scenarios: 1) AGI is an economic singularity or 2) AI is a normal technology. Actually, the article goes ways deeper, I really enjoyed reading it.
I can concur that AI did not transform my life too. Anyway, here we go: Why A.I. Didn’t Transform Our Lives in 2025. This was supposed to be the year when autonomous agents took over everyday tasks. The tech industry overpromised and underdelivered.
This time last year, leaders like Altman were making it sound like we’d raced over a technological cliff, and that we were tumbling chaotically toward an automated workforce. Such breathlessness now seems rash. Lately, in an effort to calibrate my expectations about artificial intelligence, I’ve been thinking about a podcast interview with Karpathy, the OpenAI co-founder, from October. Dwarkesh Patel, the interviewer, asked him why the Year of the Agent had failed to materialize. “I feel like there’s some overpredictions going on in the industry,” Karpathy replied. “In my mind, this is really a lot more accurately described as the Decade of the Agent.” [“some overpredictions” is putting it extremely mildly by the way]
The American experiment has always had to contend with bouts of disorder, disarray, and doubt. But the United States has also periodically rediscovered and renewed itself, sometimes in profound ways, and it must do so again. Its authoritarian adversaries are displaying audacity and resolve, but the nature of their regimes always presents an opportunity: their loyalists are their true enemies within.

Been kind of a rough winter already here in Ann Arbor, Michigan. So I dream of 15 Best White-Sand Beaches Around the World. Which one is your favorite? I pick: Whitehaven Beach, Whitsunday Islands, Australia.
This blog started with a focus on miles and points and travel. It has evolved since then. Everything below deals with the hobby of collecting frequent flyer miles and points and maximizing your travel experiences. If you are not interested, you can stop here, thank you.
I wonder if this hobby would still be going strong if it was not for businesses revealing all the tricks so they can sell more plastic. Anyway, they won’t last long: Sweet Spots with United Airlines MileagePlus Awards.
I am going to have some Hyatt Confirmed Suite Upgrade Awards expire in February 2028. This is the reason I have waited to make my 40 and 50 night World of Hyatt Milestone Reward choices: World of Hyatt Milestone Rewards: The January Selection Trick.
This is one of the easy lay up recurring posts bloggers post: Hyatt New Hotels Bonus Promo: Earn 500 Bonus Points Per Night. I don’t check them so I can earn a few hundred points but I do check to see what new properties come on line in the Hyatt world. Looks like the new Wink chain that Hyatt acquired in Vietnam is on board and they are all Category 1 hotels. And the new Category 5 Andaz in Bangkok and new Category 3 The Standard in Pattaya as well. There is a new Hyatt House in Royal Oak, Michigan and it is a Category 3 hotel. Again, the list is dominated by growth in China. Also, the new Park Hyatt Los Cabos is on board and it is a Category 8, wow. The craziest one is a Category 5 Hyatt Place in Belgrade, Montana near Yellowstone!
Wife, son and daughter applied for the 100k CAPITAL ONE Venture X card last month and were all approved. And the 100k offer ends 1/5/2026. Details in the MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING section below.
I added an expiration date of 1/5/2026 on the 100k CAPITAL ONE Venture X card and changed the expiration date on the CHASE Freedom Unlimited card to 1/15/2026. Rest is the same, sorry.
NEW OFFERS:
30k CHASE Freedom Unlimited: No annual fee. Minimum spend only $500 in the first three months. Marketed as $300 Cash Back but you actually get 30,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points. This card earns 1.5x on everything, 5x on travel booked at the Chase travel portal, 3x on dining and drugstores, 2x on Lyft. 0% APR on purchases during the first 15 months of card membership. If you have an Ink Business Preferred, Sapphire Preferred, Sapphire Reserve or Sapphire Reserve for Business you can and you should transfer your Chase Ultimate Rewards points out to airline and hotel partners (ENDS 1/15/2026).
With the new Chase card reality, be aware that you can still get the signup bonus if you have not received a bonus on this card alone in the past 24 months. And of course you won’t get the signup bonus if you currently have this card. Which means you can still get the signup bonus even if you have another Sapphire or Freedom type card. Look, we know that 30k offers should not even move the needle at all. But for some strange reason this card’s highest signup bonus offer has been only 20,000 points so it may be the time to secure a 1.5x catch all Chase card going forward. If you have no Chase Ink Unlimited cards in your arsenal.
The Signup Bonus offers remain the dreaded “Up to 175,000 points” for the personal card. And a solid 200,000 points for the Business card.
125k CHASE Sapphire Reserve/200k CHASE Sapphire Reserve for Business
Chase raised the Signup Bonus to 125,000 from 100,000 points. The minimum spend is $5k in the first three months. As with all cards, you know what to do to help the blog, thank you. You can read a lot more about the Sapphire Reserve cards HERE.
CAPITAL ONE Spark Cash Plus: Earn a $2,000 cash bonus when you spend $30,000 in the first 3 months. Earn an additional $2,000 bonus for every $500,000 spent in the first year. To learn more about the card read this.
100k CAPITAL ONE Venture X: 100,000 points after $10k minimum spend in first six months. $395 annual fee less $300 travel credit less $100 (for 10,000 points on each anniversary). The card that still pays you $5 to carry it in your wallet. It was the #1 card offer at 75,000 so now it is offered for 100,000. See detailed description below. Click on the link, it takes you straight to the application, the only bank I am allowed to link directly to my affiliate links, thanks for your support.
200k/400k CAPITAL ONE Venture X Business: Almost identical as the personal Venture X. But higher signup bonuses and higher minimum spend requirements. 200k points for $30k spend in first three months and a whopping 400k points for an equally whopping $150k spend in the first six months. Click on the link, it takes you straight to the application, the only bank I am allowed to link directly to my affiliate links, thanks for your support. ENDING 1/19/2026.
New card: CITI AAdvantage Globe Card Launches With 90,000 Points Bonus ($350 Fee). The minimum spend to earn the 90,000 AA miles is $5,000 within the first 4 months of account opening. The card earns 6x on AAdvantage Hotel bookings, 3x on AA purchases, 2x on restaurants, 2x on rides and rails and 1x on everything else. First checked bag free and preferred boarding. AA companion certificate (after the first year) for $99 plus fees and taxes. $240 credit on Turo at $30 per quarter, $100 credit on inflight purchases, $100 credit on Splurge (up to two merchants from 1st Dibs, eligible AAdvantage Hotels, Future Personal Training, or Live Nation). 4 Admirals Club lounge passes every year. $120 Global Entry/TSAPreCheck every four years. No foreign transaction fees.
Citi now offers the 100k CITI Strata Elite card after $6,000 minimum spend. This is Citi’s premium card at a $595 annual fee. $300 annual hotel credit, $200 annual Splurge credits, $200 annual Blacklane credit, 4 annual American Airlines Admirals Club lounge passes, Priority Pass Select membership and $120 Global Entry/TSA Precheck credit. Earning structure is: 12x points per dollar spent on Hotels, Car Rentals, and Attractions booked on cititravel.com, 6x points per dollar spent on Air Travel booked on cititravel.com, 6x points per dollar spent at restaurants on Citi Nights purchases, Friday and Saturday from 6 PM – 6 AM EST, 3x points per dollar spent at Restaurants any other time, 1.5x points per dollar spent on All Other Purchases. Points can now be transferred out to American Airlines. This card is a Mastercard. There is a $145 discount off the annual fee if you are a Citigold customer or have a Private Client relationship (requires over $200k with Citi). Citi Private Clients get the first annual fee waived. Citi is not an easy bank to deal with so beware. Email me with ANY questions.
American Express just came in with elevated offers on all four Hilton Honors cards, they all ENDING 1/14/2026:
– Honors: 100,000 points after $2,000 spend in six months – Surpass: 155,000 points after $3,000 spend in six months – Aspire: 175,000 points after $6,000 spend in six months – Business: 175,000 points after $8,000 spend in six months
And Chase just elevated this offer:
Chase Marriott Boundless 125,000 Points + Free Night Certificate (up to 50,000 points) after $3,000 in six months
30k CHASE United Gateway
One of my favorite no annual fee keeper cards. Just $1k minimum spend in the first three months. Earns 2x on United purchases, gas stations, local transit and commuting, 1x on everything else. You get expanded award availability and 2 free checked bags after $10k spend in a calendar year. 25% off in in-flight purchases. No foreign transaction fees. Many spend based promos with this card from personal experience.
The card has its annual $95 fee WAIVED for the first year. No annoying credits to deal with, it just earns 2 points everywhere. And you can earn 5x on hotels and rental cars booked on the Capital One travel portal too. And when you have a Capital One Venture X or the Venture card above, the $1,000 can be turned into 100,000 miles.

MY ACTION AND BLOG BUZZING
I have been focusing on the 100k Capital One Venture X card minimum spend for my wife’s and daughter’s new cards. Actually, just got the 100k in wife’s account and now helping daughter inch closer to the 100k payday. I still get that euphoric feeling seeing six figures just added to the travel miles/points bank, it is just one of those special moments in life I guess.
I am still mentally adjusting to the hard facts on the ground that Chase bank will likely no longer underwrite my family’s trips. And it is not easy adjusting to the new reality. And with the upcoming “refresh” of the Sapphire Preferred card (with higher annual fee of course) I am starting to think the unthinkable. Dropping Chase from my main points ecosystem. Ok, I need to go for a walk right now, omg, what did I just type?
I am finding myself towards shifting more of my cc spend towards my CAPITAL ONE Venture X card and likely transferring them to Air Canada Aeroplan. Also, need to mentally start counting on the annual $15k spend requirement for the free night cert on both my personal CHASE World of Hyatt Visa and my AMEX Hilton Surpass.
Also, I will continue to shift more spend towards Amex cards hoping to get back in the fold sometime in 2026. I still want to get an AMEX Schwab Platinum card and drop my AMEX Business Platinum because the personal Platinum credits are so much better. The AMEX Schwab Platinum signup bonus is down to 80k points right now, I may take another swing at it. Several swings at it when the signup bonus was 120k was met with the dreaded pop up “no signup bonus for you” message. But I never give up lol.
The CHASE Sapphire Reserve for Business card is on a death watch, I should probably call to see if the bank offers me any retention goodies. Also, the United Business card is also going to the trash can; even though I must admit the two United lounge passes that come with it came super handy in my hellish weather impacted return flight from Newark to Detroit on December 26. Just reevaluating my years long Chase driven habits. There is no way starting this year that I could replicate my Thailand/Malaysia family trips with so many Hyatt hotel nights on points. Because Chase points will not be as easy to get going forward. Which is just super sad, oh well.
Looking at my notes, I received a total of $950 credits on my now $895 AMEX Business Platinum in calendar year 2025. And $150 credits on my $150 AMEX Hilton Surpass. And $350 credits on the now $795 CHASE Sapphire Reserve for Business card (and this is why this one has to go). I don’t keep track of Uber and Doordash credits, life it too short to get so detailed.
The state of the blog? 2025 revenue was down 22%. And since over 90% comes from credit card sales, combined with the never ending bank restrictions (looking at you Chase primarily) it is crazy I am still here blogging away.
2026 will be a year of changes. Which start with major construction at my home renovating the kitchen and most of the main floor. Actually, the only room not affected will be my home office. Where I will be barricaded banging away on 2025 tax returns. And more later on. And travel plans are non existent right now. I should not have gone for Globalist World of Hyatt status again, oh well.
I am going to start keeping track of who supports this blog in 2026. Looking in my Hyatt app, I have 4 Free Nights, 3 Guest of Honor certs and 5 Suite Upgrade Award certs. Please let me know when you get approved for a credit card using my links, thank you. The top supporters will always be preferred, stay tuned.
I don’t waste any time doing posts about my predictions and then more posts about how off I was in my predictions, what a waste of bandwidth.
I ended up burning less than 2 million miles/points in 2025 as I ended it with “only” 1,856,248. Burning over 2 million miles/points for two years in a row was always going to be tough to achieve. But I felt like I gave it my best shot. I am recalibrating, just like when my HP printer does once in a while lol.
I am continuing to simplify my miles/points life. Got an alert my 587 Choice Privileges points expire in three months. And I am like, I don’t give a shit, let them go #freedom.
My kids’ Discover cards are off my plate as they are now both getting accustomed with their Capital One Venture X cards. Sometimes this month apparently the Discover cards are supposed to be appearing in the Capital One portal, we shall see.
The Chase Sapphire Reserve for Business and United Business cards will be taken to the back and executed soon. I may also kill wife’s United Explorer card as well. Keeping my United Gateway card as I do have the Saver award availability access locked in for 2026 for having spent $10k on it in 2025. I think I may do this again as it will be the only United card in my arsenal. Of course World of Hyatt Visa and Amex Hilton Surpass are keepers. I was thinking to let Hilton go at some point but I am still in love with our stay experience at the Conrad Koh Samui so I am keeping it for now. Three AMEX Business Plus cards are a no brainer for AMEX Membership Rewards place holders.
For now, keeping the four Sapphire Preferred cards but will likely do a deep dive reevaluation of them when the long awaited “refresh” comes later this year. And knowing how Chase does “refreshes” expect them to be awful. I guess I am keeping my own Chase Ink Business Cash for now and maybe I consider killing wife’s Chase Ink Business Unlimited card since she now will be using her own Capital One Venture X card primarily.
We all have way too many monthly subscriptions. And I am trying to have less of them to continue consolidating/simplifying my life. I stopped subscriptions to Texas Monthly, Bridge Michigan, Milenomics, Thrifty Traveler, a financial planning software I use in my main job and will not renew PointsYeah. I need to continue doing this in 2026. I am also continuing to throw at least one item in the trash every day, maybe one day when I turn 100 my basement will be clear lol.
The 40 day grieving period for the loss of my relative in Greece is almost here. And I will soon start posting again on Instagram and YouTube, continuing where I left off at our Thailand/Malaysia trip, stay tuned.
I DO have a separate page listing my affiliate links HERE including Rakuten and Top Cash Back and more.
I am giving myself a challenge to average 5 credit card sales and 15 Buy Me a Coffee sales per month.
As of today, I have burned 0 miles/points year to date (after burning 1,856,248 miles/points in 2025 and 2,027,816 in 2024) and have 4,030,039 miles/points in the bank.

One of the additions to the Chase Sapphire Reserve coupon book is the StubHub
semi-annual $150 credit. Well …I used it on Dec 30 to get a ticket to a game
between the SF Giants and Washington Nationals. A much better seat than
I would have purchased otherwise. I knew StubHub does baseball games but
I didn’t know it also sells tickets to ballet performances. Welll … maybe.

Happy New Year to everyone! Thanks, George, for all the hard work putting the posts together. Every time there is good and interesting stuff to read. Thinning the “card herd” is something I am looking at this year. Just converted an Amex Everyday from the $95 AF Preferred card to the regular no-fee. Couple premium cards are on their way out this year depending on retention offers working or not as well.
It’s an ever-changing world in this hobby and I am older and it is harder to keep up but I keep trying.

Hello from Tokyo. Celebrated another new year crossing the international date line around 2pm. Despite following my jet lag app decently, I’ve still been woken up wide awake around 1am both nights. Managed to pop some more melatonin and sleep in until 6ish at least.
Having flown AA’s new flagship business product from Brisbane in November, it was pretty tough going back to their old business product. I did manage to get the Japanese meal this trip, though, so wasn’t all bad news. They really need to bring back the Live TV product, specifically Sport 24. I don’t know if it is just me getting old, but I find most movies these days terrible. I ended up watching some WW2 bomber tv series for 4 hours of the 13-hour flight.
It snowed here last night, about to go for a run in Ueno park with the temps below freezing. I might actually enjoy the Thailand heat next week at this rate.
Also in card news, I cancelled my Amex Hilton and no longer have a relationship with Amex. The $550 annual fee just wasn’t worth it anymore with all my business switching to Hyatt or Agoda. Plus, I haven’t really been happy with my “diamond” status getting me anything of value in the Hilton ecosystem. Having to barter a late checkout is unbecoming after having Hyatt give it to you automatically. The old phrase holds true: “When everybody has status, nobody has status.”
Happy New Year to all!

@ Sam: You will always be first…when I let you 🙂
@ DML: Capital One does baseball games much better I think 😉 This reminds me, there is a $50 gift card benefit in the CSR I need to claim for the 1st quarter of 2026.
@ Carl: Yeah, thinning the herd is going to be a 2026 theme for sure. Hear you about…evolving all around, as in age and hobbyist stuff 🙂
@ Bob: Thanks a lot for your travel updates, enjoy! I fear Hyatt will raise the 60 night minimum for Globalist. I hear you about Hilton. If it was not for the glorious Conrad Koh Samui stay I would probably be out of the program as well. Been brutally cold here in Michigan and I dream of Thailand…a lot! I guess getting older this cold climate is getting to be tougher to handle.

Like clockwork, on January 2 here came another spending offer for the no annual fee United Gateway card:
The higher of:
Spend $13k get 10k miles or spend $20k get 15k miles by March 31, 2026
At some point I would need to pay the balance on them new kitchen appliances and I may use this card…and seal the Saver award availability through 2027 and then park the card in the drawer. Until the next spend based promo comes…which I am sure it is coming lol.
So many bloggers/vloggers, always desperate for any content, keep falling for the Bilt (oopsie, we let one rumor come out…rinse/repeat to oblivion).
Someone asked why I dropped Milenomics. I just don’t get any value, I don’t have the time for manufactures spending tricks anymore. The fact they never mentioned or linked to me and/or they keep praising and linking the mega National Enquirer type shit VFTW unloads several times daily has absolutely nothing to do with my decision, cough.

Gotta take care of the real job instead of this “venture”.

There will not be a post tomorrow Tuesday.
The 2025 Best of Lists Edition #3 will appear on Friday.
Gotta take care of the real job instead of this “venture”.
